Enhancement adds geo-referencing to approach charts on Evolution MFDs

Oshkosh, WI, July 27, 2010: Aspen Avionics, Inc., manufacturer of innovative flight display solutions, and Seattle Avionics Software, an industry leading aviation software developer and data provider, announced today that geo-referencing – the display of the aircraft’s relative position on navigation charts – is now available on all instrument approach procedures and airport diagrams displayed on Aspen’s
EFD1000 and EFD500 Multi-function Flight Display (MFD) products. Aspen is the first avionics manufacturer to offer a certified geo-referenced AeroNav (formerly NACO) chart solution. The new geo-referencing capability is available with no activation fee or additional charges for Aspen customers.

Aspen MFDs feature the full Seattle Avionics ChartDataTM library developed from the AeroNav U.S. Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP) charts, Departure Procedure charts, Standard Terminal Arrival Route charts, and airport diagrams. Seattle Avionics transforms the government charts using proprietary algorithms to produce the geo-referenced chart database. Aspen partnered with Seattle Avionics to bring this geo-referenced ChartData to the certified Evolution Flight Display System, giving pilots another tool for enhanced situational awareness while in the air. Unique to the Evolution system is the ability to simultaneously view the approach chart and GPS
flight plan data without needing to switch between different MFD pages, further improving pilot situational awareness and reducing cockpit workload.

“This joint development for the additional ChartData functionality is significant in that it realizes a common goal for Aspen and Seattle Avionics – to bring affordable technology to the general aviation community,” says Aspen’s Vice President of Marketing, Brad Hayden. “No other certified avionics manufacturer offers this level of functionality at this price point.”

“We are pleased to have worked with Aspen to develop the world’s first FAA certified geo-referenced aviation charts derived from the AeroNav procedures,” says Steve Podradchik, CEO of Seattle Avionics Software. “By combining our ChartData with the powerful display capabilities of Aspen Evolution MFDs, pilots can now see their aircraft position overlaid on the chart while flying an approach or while taxiing on the ground – all at an extremely affordable price.”

The Geo-referenced Charts and Airport Diagrams software comes standard on all Aspen MFDs. ChartData subscription updates are available from Seattle Avionics Software. One-time updates cost $99, and annual subscriptions cost $299. Seattle Avionics Software is offering 90 days of ChartData updates (enough for three 28-day cycle updates) at no charge to Aspen customers. To activate the ChartData subscription, new customers simply set up a free account at the Seattle Avionics Software website: www.seattleavionics.com/aspen.

Existing Aspen customers will automatically receive the new geo-referenced chart feature in the July 28th Aspen ChartData update from Seattle Avionics Software.

Oshkosh, WI, July 27, 2010: Aspen Avionics, Inc. announced today a new extended product warranty program available for its line of Evolution Flight Display products. The new extended product warranty program lengthens Aspen Avionics’ industry leading, no-nonsense warranty for one year, and is available direct from Aspen. The extended warranty covers component repair of the Evolution Flight Display System, with special pricing options for multi-display installations.

“The Evolution Flight Displays are easy to upgrade with new features and compatible with existing avionics, and as a result we expect them to be in our customers’ panels for a very long time,” said Mark Ferrari, Aspen’s Vice President of Sales and Customer Service. “Aspen’s affordable extended product warranty program is designed to give owners coverage against unexpected maintenance after
their factory warranties expire. The new warranty can be renewed annually for ongoing protection of their avionics investment.”

Aspen Board member Phil Boyer pens column, hosts new Aspen pilot forum

Oshkosh, WI, July 27, 2010: Owners and future owners of the Evolution Flight Display System will soon have new sources of product information and online venues to interact with each other on the company’s website. Aspen announced today that former AOPA President and current Aspen Board Member Phil Boyer has launched a column posted to the Aspen website where he will share his experiences flying with the Evolution Flight Display. Additionally, Boyer will moderate an online Aspen pilot forum, also hosted on the Aspen site, which will provide a venue for visitors to ask questions and exchange views.

“The transition to flying with a glass cockpit is easy, and the capabilities of the Aspen Evolution System are enormous. Combined with existing panel avionics, the array of data presented to a pilot is almost limitless,” said Boyer. “The last 14 years of my over 40 years of general aviation flying has been with glass displays. My intent is to share experiences and present scenarios on how to get the most from this unique equipment; assisting both those familiar and new to this technology.”

Boyer’s column, titled the Evolution Cockpit Chronicles, will feature regular posts about his time flying behind the Evolution System in his Aspen-equipped Bonanza. The Evolution Cockpit Chronicles will include Boyer’s insights into how to transition smoothly from steam gauge to glass instruments, tips and techniques for using the Evolution displays and his overall reflections on being a general aviation pilot flying a modern, glass display system. Readers of Evolution Cockpit Chronicles will be able to add their own comments to Boyer’s column.

Evolution Cockpit Chronicles by Phil Boyer may be found at www.aspenavionics.com/pilotchronicles.

In addition, an online discussion forum for Aspen pilots, moderated by Boyer, will launch within the next few weeks. With more than three thousand airplanes flying with the Evolution Flight Display System, the company feels the time is right to have a place on the site where customers can freely exchange their tips and experiences. Just like the Aspen Customer Gallery where Evolution owners post their installation and early flying experiences, the Aspen pilot forum will be monitored but not edited.

“Aspen Avionics has always striven to create a home and sense of community for our customers,” said Aspen’s Vice President of Marketing Brad Hayden. “Our customers know and respect Phil, so he is the ideal pilot to share his opinions since they already trust him. We look forward to Phil’s postings as well as comments and opinions among the Aspen pilot community.”

Aspen President John Uczekaj will continue writing his blog, unique with his viewpoint of being both Aspen’s president and a new pilot and aircraft owner. His blog may be accessed at www.aspenavionics.wordpress.com. Uczekaj took his blog’s readers through a detailed description of the installation process (complete with a glitch or two) in his Diamond DA40, as well as his first flight and his first long
trip from Albuquerque to Sun ‘n Fun and other flying experiences.

“We want our website to be an informative and enjoyable gathering spot for our customers,” added Hayden. “Phil’s column and the Aspen pilot forum will enable our website to be a place where both new and prospective customers will want to gather.”

This is the third year Aspen immerses itself in North 40 community

Albuquerque, NM, July 15, 2010: Aspen customers and future customers alike are invited to the North 40 Welcome Center to cool off, rehydrate and visit with fellow pilots. Located adjacent to the North 40 admissions gate and tram stop, the Aspen Avionics Welcome Center will have cold water available, table seating, AirVenture maps and information, and an industrial-size air conditioner.

“The North 40 is truly the heart of AirVenture,” said Brad Hayden, Aspen’s Vice President of Marketing. “It’s important for us as a company to find ways to be closer to our customers and foster a feeling of community. Partnering with the EAA to create the North 40 Welcome Center has been a great way to do this.”

This year’s expanded partnership with the EAA will bring some additional creature comforts to the camping area, including an EAA merchandise tent, wireless internet, email kiosks and picnic tables. The Aspen tent will also have available for use a XM weather station and a Jeppesen flight planning kiosk.

Several customer aircraft, along with John Uczekaj’s Diamond DA40 (Aspen’s President and CEO), will also be on display for visitors to see the Evolution Flight Display system in action.

The Aspen Avionics North 40 Welcome Center is open from Saturday, July 24th, through the end of the show on Sunday, August 1st. After visiting Aspen’s main exhibit in Hangar B-2126, potential customers can then see what the Aspen Evolution will look like in an aircraft similar to theirs out at the North 40.

The Aspen Evolution Flight Display System is an affordable, expandable and upgradable PFD, MFD and hazard sensor cockpit solution for general aviation aircraft. Highly compatible with existing aircraft avionics, the flexible Evolution Flight Display System lets aircraft owners install all Evolution Flight Displays and options at once, or separately, as their needs and budgets permit.

EFD1000C3 Pro PFD Now Available for a Wide Range of Cabin Class Aircraft

Albuquerque, NM, July 7, 2010: Aspen Avionics announced today that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted Technical Standard Order (TSO) Authorization for the Evolution EFD1000C3 Pro Primary Flight Display (PFD) for Class III aircraft. The already robust Evolution Software now meets the Level B assurance levels required for FAR Part 23 Class III aircraft, making the increased safety, reliability and functionality of the Evolution Displays available to operators of piston and turbine aircraft weighing between 6,000 and 12,500 pounds. Aircraft owners can install the newly certified EFD1000C3 Pro PFD independently, or in combination with the popular Evolution Multi-function Flight Displays (MFDs) to fit their particular flight mission needs and budgets.

“Many of the Class III aircraft are used in revenue-generating activities such as air freight, corporate travel and air charter. They require feature-rich, reliable and cost-effective avionics packages that can be installed with minimal downtime. The Aspen Evolution Flight Display System is designed to meet these specific requirements,” said Aspen’s President and CEO, John Uczekaj. He continues, “Additionally, a key benefit that the Aspen system offers is freedom from the recurring costs of overhauling aging mechanical gyros, reducing overall operating expenses. Obviously, Class III aircraft owners and fleet operators will find this aspect of our display products very appealing.”

Initial additions to Aspen’s Approved Model List (AML) include many popular Class III airframes such as the Piper Navajo and Cheyenne series, most King Air models, the Cessna 400 series, and turbine Twin Commanders. More than 200 Class III models are currently approved and Aspen is continually working with the FAA to add more models to the list. Aspen’s AML now includes over 900 Class I, Class II and Class III fixed-wing aircraft.

Built upon a robust, solid-state technology platform, the EFD1000C3 Pro PFD has features such as integrated GPS Steering, digital HSI with dual bearing pointers and moving map. Aspen is also offering Evolution packages that bundle MFDs with the PFD. The EFD1000 MFD and 500 MFD both support hazard awareness features like weather, traffic and Stormscope, as well as Charts and Geo-referenced Airport Diagrams. The 1000 MFD also includes fully redundant ADAHRS sensors. In the event of PFD failure, a simple push of the REV button converts the 1000 MFD to a fully functioning PFD.

The EFD1000C3 Pro PFD has a list price of $12,995. Special launch pricing of $10,995 will be in effect until October 31, 2010.
